Many beginning golfers find themselves overwhelmed by the price of equipment as well as the amount of options available. Tim Cahill, golfer, certified club-fitter and owner of Golf USA in Lufkin, Texas shares the following tips for beginner golfers.
Budget for a Golf Starter Set
Don’t go over the top. An excellent entry level set can be purchased for around $200. It is best to keep the starter set inexpensive until it is decided if the game will continued to be played. New players tend to be hard on clubs so now isn’t the time to go for the most expensive clubs. Also, ask around, many beginners find friends or co-workers that are willing to give or loan them clubs until they can purchase their own set.
Golf Clubs Needed for Beginners
Irons are the most important and most used clubs. Short irons like the 8, 9 and wedges are the most important. This is because about 60% of shots are within 100 yards of the green. It is a good idea to have one fairway wood in the starter set. Inexpensive hybrids can be used in place of long irons. Beginners need clubs that are user- friendly and more forgiving. As the golfer progresses, they will need clubs that will help them shape their shots. Many stores also offer trade-ins, allowing intermediate users to trade-in their beginner clubs for the next set. Instead of using the beginner set as a trade-in, they can also be loaned or given to a friend as they start playing.
Find a Knowledgeable MerchantTwo big issues for golf equipment, when purchased by less than knowledgeable merchants are counterfeits and warranties. Many companies now offer warranties but guidelines must be followed to ensure coverage. If a deal sounds too good to be true, it may be. Unfortunately, there are many counterfeit clubs in circulation. It is important to work with someone who knows what to look for. Many stores also have in-house club-fitters, making it even more convenient for their customers.
Other Tips for Golf Beginners
Just like with other games, golfers follow rules of etiquette. Be sure to learn golf etiquette before stepping onto the green. This will help prevent the beginner from committing an embarrassing faux pas. Learning the basics of the game is an essential start to playing golf. Golf lessons are more important than expensive equipment. Another important tip is to remember this is just a game, so have fun.
